Praying for Peace

by Tera Thomas

They are cutting down trees—acres of them. When I moved to Pittsboro, it was rural and peaceful and quiet. Now they are building four-lane highways in every direction, tearing down thousands of wooded acres and paving over the scarred earth. Driving from my home into town I feel like I am passing through a war zone. It hurts me deep inside.

Since the road is being widened, housing developments are going up and even more trees are going down so fast you can’t even believe your eyes. Soon there will be traffic and commuters and the quaint, quiet life those of us who live here love will be gone.

Cows and sheep are being decimated in England. I remember Devon, so peaceful and beautiful. I spent a lot of time there twenty years ago, breathing in the tranquility, eating clotted cream on scones. I see the photos now of piles of bodies burning, of empty fields, of innocent animals watching the horror, of broken hearted people.

There are bodies piling up all over this planet—animal and human alike, not to mention the bodies of trees. It is so easy to find bad news; it’s everywhere you look. Sometimes it is so overwhelming to live through these times, I feel lost and helpless and afraid. Sometimes I feel like I am just one small person who wants to change the world and it is a daunting, impossible task.

And then I remember who I am. I am a spiritual being in a physical body. My every thought, word, deed, contributes to the collective reality. So, what do I want that reality to be? Do I want to focus on that bad news or do I want to bring a different reality onto this planet. I definitely don’t want to be casting my vote for the side I don’t want to win.

I take a deep breath, clear my mind, open my heart, and send my prayers to the trees being cut down, to the animals and humans who are suffering, to the perpetrators of these deeds that I don’t agree with, to our government, to the whole planet. And I am reconnected; I am able to breathe again.

This process of sending my energy to assist others and to create a world that I would feel good about living in, is the only thing that I can think of to do that may actually someday make a difference. I often get impatient and wonder why it takes so long to see the results. But I know there are results, I see them in small ways now and I feel that soon there will be greater results. The world is changing, little-by-little, step-by-step. Every day the number of people who awaken to their spiritual nature and their connection to all of life grows.

A little over two years ago Jan Spiers, Dave Gulick, and I began an organized meditation to focus our energy on the kind of world that would be harmonious, peaceful, nurturing for all species. When we did the first of our meditations I did not have a clear vision of how to create this world, but I saw that animals and beings of light from all over the planet were participating with us. I asked them how we should move forward to help create the world of partnership we wanted to bring into reality through our prayers and this is what they told me:

“Take one step at a time. Trust that you will be shown the way. The web of light you are weaving is more powerful than you realize. You notice that you have many, many animals and spirits already joined with you three brave humans. There will be even more. When the time is right, call more humans to this meditation. Create happenings where you link humans and animals energetically and open your hearts. Miracles will happen and none will leave these events unchanged.”

We created the Hummingbird Farm Meditation, a time once a month for people all over the world to sit in their own homes and add their energy to this dream. At first, many joined us and then people began to forget. We changed the meditation to the Solstices and Equinoxes—4 times a year.

The Summer Solstice marks the peak of light and the beginning of our descent into darkness. It is a day of powerful energy and occurs this year on Thursday, June 21st.  Wherever you are, you can connect your energy with many others and focus on a world of peace and harmony for all. If you don’t have a half-hour, just send a thought. If you can’t participate at the exact time, do it when you can and intend that your meditation join with the others creating this web of light.

Our planet needs healing and time is of the essence. Please join us:  June 21st – 8-8:30 p.m. EDT
